Why can't I grow a beard? For most men the answer is genetics and age, not anything you did wrong. Facial hair thickens slowly, often into your late twenties or early thirties, and some men just have a lighter beard. A smaller number have a medical cause that a doctor can check.

The short answer: give it three months, keep the skin healthy and the edges clean, and talk to a doctor or dermatologist if it falls out in patches or stops growing. A barber can shape a patchy beard so it looks intentional while you wait.

Why can't I grow a beard?

The most common reasons are genetics, age and hormones, and the next most common is simply stopping too soon. Many beards look hopeless at four weeks and fine at twelve.

GeneticsThin or patchy cheeks that stay thinShape it, keep it short and neat
AgeFills in slowly in your twentiesWait, do not shave it off
BreakageDry, brittle hair that snapsMoisturize, trim split ends

Genes decide how many follicles you have and how they respond to hormones, so the pattern often runs in the family. Look at the men in your family for a hint of what yours will do.

Do not treat a thin beard as a failure. Plenty of men with sparse cheeks wear a neat chin beard, a goatee, a mustache or a short faded beard and look sharp. The goal is a shape that suits the hair you actually have. If you want to go one step further, give it a full three months with no shaving of the cheeks, since the hair that looks patchy at week four is often the same hair that fills in by week twelve.

Also check your habits. Close shaving every day can irritate the skin, and picking at bumps can leave marks that slow regrowth. Washing with harsh soap dries the hair and makes it snap. Cleaning up your routine costs nothing and gives the hair the best chance.

Stress and poor sleep can also play a small part, since hair follows the general state of the body. A few weeks of regular sleep, regular meals and less stress will not rebuild a beard, but they remove one more thing that could be working against you. If you recently started a new medicine and notice thinner facial hair, mention it to your doctor and do not stop taking anything on your own.

Finally, compare yourself to your own timeline and not to a photo online. Many of those beards are filtered, dyed or filled in. A real beard has gaps, curls and a few gray hairs, and a good barber can make all of that look like a choice. Ask in the chair what shape suits you.

Medical causes are less common but real. Alopecia areata can cause round bald patches in the beard, and thyroid or hormone issues can affect facial hair. We cannot diagnose these. If growth stalls, see a doctor. For the timeline of a normal beard, see how long it takes to grow a beard.

Why does my beard itch?

A beard itches mostly in the first few weeks, when short, stiff hairs poke at the skin, and later when the skin underneath is dry. It is usually normal and passes.

In the first two weeks the hair is cut at an angle at the tips, and the sharp ends press on the skin. Washing and moisturizing helps, and so does leaving it alone. Do not scratch hard, because that causes bumps and ingrown hairs.

Coily hair has one more problem: it curls back toward the skin. That is how ingrown hairs happen on the neck and cheeks. If you get red bumps, our guide to fixing an ingrown hair explains the basics. If the itching stays after a month or comes with pain, swelling or oozing, see a dermatologist.

Why is my beard itchy even after I trim it?

If it still itches, the cause is probably dry skin, dandruff in the beard or a reaction to something you use on your face. A trim does not fix any of those.

Washing two or three times a week is enough for most beards. Washing every day can dry the skin and make the itch worse. If the itch has lasted weeks and nothing helps, a doctor can check for an infection or a skin condition.

What is a modern beard?

A modern beard is a short to medium beard with clean, sharp edges and a faded or tapered blend into the sideburns. It looks neat and intentional rather than wild.

The look relies on lines more than length. A defined cheek line, a crisp neckline and an even length make a short beard look current. A taper or skin fade on the cheeks adds depth. On coily hair this looks especially crisp.

It is also the best answer if your beard is patchy, because the short length and faded cheeks hide thin areas. Ask your barber to set the lines and blend the sides, and see our guide to fading a beard into the sideburns for how it works. Our beard trim and sculpt is call for pricing and gives you that shape in one visit.

What is the best beard for an oval face?

An oval face suits almost any beard, because its balanced proportions work with short stubble, a full beard or a neat goatee. You can choose by lifestyle.

A short boxed beard with a clean cheek line shows the shape of the jaw. A fuller beard with a rounded bottom suits you if you want a rugged look. Avoid a beard that is very long and narrow, which can stretch the face. If you are growing it out, keep the sides a touch shorter than the chin and let the chin lead.

With an oval face the shape is more about your hair and your style than your bone structure. Try a number 3 all over, then adjust. If you like the look of a short, sharp beard, the current styles for men pair well with it.

Ask the barber to check your cheek line against your jaw. A line that follows the natural curve from sideburn to chin keeps an oval face looking balanced, while a line cut straight across can make it look boxy. Keep the neck clean, one finger above the Adam's apple, and let the chin carry the length.

How do you wear medium length hair with a beard?

Match the two so one does not overpower the other. Medium length hair on top works best with a beard of short to medium length, with the sides of the hair tapered to meet the beard at the sideburn.

If your hair is two to four inches on top, a faded or tapered side keeps the shape clean and lets the beard blend in. Without that blend, the hair and beard can look like two separate pieces. Ask for the sideburn to flow into the cheek line.

For coily or curly hair, a short curl on top and a tight beard make a strong, balanced look. See our guide to short curly hair for men for cuts that fit. A haircut is $25 and a fade is $30 on our price list, and the beard trim and sculpt is call for pricing.

Questions readers ask

Can a patchy beard fill in later?

Often yes. Many men keep filling in through their twenties and early thirties, so a patchy beard at 20 may look different at 28.

Does shaving help a patchy beard grow in?

No. Shaving does not change how many follicles you have or how thick the hair grows. Keep it short and neat while it fills in.

When should I see a doctor about my beard?

See a doctor if the beard falls out in round patches, stops growing or comes with other symptoms. A dermatologist can check for skin and hormone causes.

Do beard supplements and oils make it grow?

Published research does not support big claims. Ask a doctor before taking anything to try to grow facial hair.
