Stubble Beard: How Long to Keep It, Guard Numbers and Upkeep

Beard Trim in Laurelton, NY

A stubble beard is hair kept very short, about one to three days of growth, with a defined cheek line and neckline. It looks rugged and tidy at the same time, and it is the easiest beard style to keep up, because there is no length to manage and no beard to comb.

The short answer: use a number 1 or number 2 guard, keep the edges crisp, and trim it every five to seven days. It works on most face shapes and hair types, and on coily and 4C hair it keeps the skin cleaner and lowers the chance of razor bumps compared with a close shave.

What is a stubble beard?

Stubble is beard hair cut to an even, very short length, generally one eighth to a quarter inch. It is not the same as an unshaven face. Real stubble has a shape: the neckline is clean, the cheek line is set and the length is the same all over.

Some men call it designer stubble, and the name is fair, because the sharp edges are what separate it from a face that simply has not been shaved. A barber can set the lines with a trimmer or a razor so the stubble looks deliberate for a week or more.

Which guard gives which look

GuardApprox lengthLook
Number 0 or trimmer onlyUnder 1 mmFive o'clock shadow
Number 11/8 inchLight stubble
Number 21/4 inchClassic stubble
Number 33/8 inchShort beard

Ask for a number 2 if you are unsure. You can always go shorter, and you cannot put length back.

How do you trim stubble so it stays sharp?

Trim at the same guard every week, shape the cheek line and the neckline with a trimmer, and leave the rest alone. The hard part is the lines, not the length.

  1. Set your guard and go against the grain, starting at the sideburns.
  2. Define the cheek line, about a finger width from the corner of the mouth up to the sideburn.
  3. Set the neckline about a finger width above the Adam's apple.
  4. Clean the area above and below with a trimmer or a razor.

Our guide to trimming a beard without taking too much goes through the same steps at a longer length. If you want a sharper cheek edge between visits, see how to line up a beard at home. When it needs shaping that you cannot do in a mirror, book a beard trim and sculpt.

Does beard balm help a stubble beard?

Not much at stubble length. Beard balm is a leave in product made with butters and oils that soften and style longer hair. It does little for hair that is a quarter inch long.

What stubble does need is clean skin and light moisture. Wash with a mild cleanser, rinse, and use a light, non greasy moisturizer or beard oil on the skin if it feels tight. Balm becomes useful once the beard is a half inch or longer, because it controls frizz and helps the beard keep its shape. On coily hair, a little balm can also add a bit of shine and softness, though too much can leave a greasy look.

If the skin under the stubble flakes or itches, see our beard dandruff guide for the usual causes and what to try first.

What is a short boxed beard?

A short boxed beard is the next step up: full coverage across the cheeks, chin and jaw, trimmed to about a half inch to an inch and squared off at the edges. It is stubble with a little more weight.

It suits men who want a real beard without the maintenance of a long one. The box shape, a defined cheek line and a flat bottom edge, makes the face look balanced. Ask for the sides at a number 3 or 4, the neckline shaped, and the edges squared. If you want a soft blend from the sideburn into the beard, ask for a faded beard where the sideburns taper down to skin.

Boxed beards need a touch up about every two weeks, a little longer than stubble.

Does minoxidil work for a beard?

Some men try minoxidil to fill patchy spots, but it is a drug, not a grooming product, and it is not approved for beards. Ask your doctor or a dermatologist before using it, because they can check why the hair is patchy and whether it makes sense for you.

Beard growth depends mostly on genetics, hormones and age, and results from any product vary. If you are curious about speeding things up in a safe way, our guide to making your beard grow faster separates the habits that help from the ones that do nothing. Keeping the beard at a stubble length can also hide thin patches, because short hair covers skin better than a longer, wispy beard.

We do not sell treatments at the shop. We can tell you what your beard is doing and shape it so the thin spots do not show.

What is a chin strap beard?

A chin strap is a thin line of hair that runs along the jawline from sideburn to sideburn and under the chin, with no hair on the cheeks. It works as a frame for the face.

It suits men with a strong jaw and men who grow cheek hair unevenly. It is a high maintenance style because the line needs to be exact, which means a shape up every five to seven days. Ask for the strap about a half inch to an inch wide, with a clean edge on both sides, and keep the width the same all the way around. A razor gives the sharpest result, so the hot towel shave is a good way to set the clean skin around the strap.

How do you grow a Viking beard?

A Viking beard is a long, full beard, often with a longer mustache and sometimes braided. It takes months of growing, a lot of patience and a regular trim to stop the ends from splitting.

Plan on at least four to six months of growth. Do not trim the length during that time, only clean up the neck and cheeks. Wash it gently, comb it while damp, and get the ends cut every six to eight weeks. Tightly coiled beards grow out and up rather than down, so a 4C Viking beard will look wide and full more than long. That is normal, and a barber can shape it into a clean, rounded outline.

If you are starting from stubble, the short curly hair for men guide shows how to keep the head and beard balanced as the beard gets longer.

Who wears stubble best, and how long does it take to grow?

Stubble suits men with an even, medium to heavy growth, and it suits men who want a beard look without committing to a full one. It takes about three to five days to get from a clean shave to a number 1 stubble, and about a week to reach a number 2 or 3.

If your growth is patchy or thin, stubble can still work, but you will see the gaps more clearly at this length than in a beard that is a half inch long. In that case ask your barber to even out the edges with a number 1 guard and leave the middle of the cheeks a little shorter, so the thin spots disappear into the skin.

Men with coily and 4C hair often get the best result at a number 1 or 2 guard. It stays soft, it hides tiny bumps better than a razor shave and the skin gets a break from daily shaving. If you see ingrown hairs, stop shaving the cheek line closer than a trimmer and keep the guard on. Questions readers ask

How do I trim different beard styles?

Use a longer guard for fuller styles and a trimmer for short ones. Set the cheek line and neckline first, then trim the length, always starting with a longer guard than you think you need.

What is the 3 month beard rule?

It says to let a beard grow for three months before judging or shaping it. The idea is that you need time to see where it grows thick and where it stays thin, so the shape you pick fits the hair you have.

How often should I trim a stubble beard?

Every five to seven days for the edges and about once a week for the length. If you only want to keep the lines clean, a line up every week or two is enough.

Can stubble cause razor bumps?

Short hair can curl back into the skin, especially on coily hair. A slightly longer length, a number 1 or 2 guard instead of a razor, usually helps. If bumps persist, see a dermatologist.

Does stubble suit every face shape?

Mostly yes. A short, even stubble with a defined neckline works on round, square and oval faces, and it makes a strong jaw look stronger.
