Should I Shave My Head? A Barber's Honest Checklist

By The Lilacroix barbers · · 1,572 words

Head Shave in Laurelton, NY

Every barber has had the conversation. A regular sits down, looks at the mirror a second longer than usual, and asks whether he should just shave it all off. Sometimes the answer is yes and he leaves looking ten years sharper. Sometimes the answer is not yet, and he leaves with a 1 guard and a plan.

Here is the honest version from our chairs in Laurelton. You should shave your head if at least two of the five signs below apply to you, and you should try a 0 guard buzz first if you have never seen your scalp. A bald head with clippers is $25, a bald head with the straight razor is $35, and a head shave with prep and aftercare is $25. The rest of this post is the checklist, what to do before you commit, and what the first two weeks look like.

The short answer: five signs it is time

Shave your head when the hair you have left is costing you more effort than the look is giving back. That is the whole test. The five signs below are the ways that usually shows up.

  1. Your crown or hairline has thinned past what a buzz cut covers. A 3 or 4 guard still shows scalp in patches.
  2. You already wear a 0 or 1 guard. You are a sixteenth of an inch from bald anyway.
  3. You are tired of the two week clock. Short cuts need a recut every 2 weeks to stay sharp, and you keep stretching it to 4.
  4. Your beard is doing the work. A full, lined beard balances a bald head better than thin hair ever will.
  5. You keep asking. Men who ask their barber about shaving three visits in a row almost always do it on the fourth.

Two of the five is enough. If only one applies, read the section on what to try first before you reach for a razor.

Sign 1: thinning a buzz cut cannot cover

A buzz cut hides a receding hairline well because it removes contrast. It does not hide a thin crown or diffuse thinning across the top, because there is no hair there to even out. If a 3 or 4 guard still leaves a bare circle at the back or a see through patch at the front, the buzz has done what it can.

At that point a shaved head looks cleaner because it gives the whole scalp one tone. Nobody can tell where the hair stopped growing. We cover the buzz versus shave decision for thinning in our post on buzz cuts for a receding hairline, and the short version is: when a buzz leaves islands, shave.

One thing a barber cannot do is tell you why the hair is thinning. If the change has been fast, patchy, or came with scalp irritation, see a dermatologist before you decide anything. Some causes are treatable and the earlier they are looked at the better.

Signs 2 and 3: you are already short, and you are tired of the clock

If you wear a 0 or 1 guard, you are already living with your head shape on display. The shave changes the texture, not the silhouette. Most men who make that jump say the only surprise was how smooth it felt and how much faster the shower got.

The clock is the other one. A 1 guard looks its best for about two weeks. A shaved head looks its best for about a week, but it takes a few minutes at home to maintain and there is no awkward middle length. If you have been pushing your recuts from two weeks to four and hating weeks three and four, you are a candidate.

Signs 4 and 5: the beard, and the fact that you keep asking

A beard changes the math. A bald head on its own can look stark. A bald head with a full, cleanly lined beard looks finished, because the weight moves from the top of the face to the bottom. Many of the best looking bald men on Merrick Blvd keep a sculpted beard and treat it as the haircut. Our beard trim and sculpt is priced on request, and we can line it on the same visit as the shave.

Then there is the question itself. If you have asked a barber, a partner, and a group chat whether you should shave, you already want to. Hair grows back at about half an inch a month. The downside of trying it is a few weeks of stubble. The downside of never trying it is years of wondering.

What to do before you shave it all off

Go to a 0 guard first. That is the one piece of advice we give everyone. A 0 shows you your head shape, your scalp tone and any bumps or scars, with a sixteenth of an inch of hair still on. If you like what you see, the full shave is a small step. If you do not, you are back to a buzz in a couple of weeks.

Check the scalp

Look for moles, bumps, dry patches or old scars once the 0 guard exposes them. None of these stop you from shaving, but a razor over a raised mole is a bad idea, and your barber will steer around it if you point it out.

Think about the sun

A scalp that has been under hair for thirty years has never been in direct sun. After the shave it needs sunscreen or a hat outside. This is not a style note, it is a skin note, and darker skin is not exempt.

Plan the beard

Decide whether you are keeping a beard before the shave, because the line between the two is what the barber shapes. A bald head with a clean beard line looks intentional. A bald head with a shaggy beard looks like you gave up.

The head shape question, honestly

Most heads look fine shaved. The ones people worry about, a flat back or a bump at the crown, are far less visible to other people than they are to you in a two mirror check. A 0 guard buzz shows you exactly what you are working with, so there is no reason to guess.

Coily hair gives you one more advantage. The scalp under tight coils is usually even in tone, and a clipper shave at a 0 leaves a faint shadow that softens any bump. If you want the smooth razor finish, the barber can take the sides and back to the skin and leave the crown at a 0 if that reads better on your head. That is the kind of call that is easy in the chair and hard in the bathroom.

What it costs and how often you do it

A shaved head is cheap to start and cheap to keep. The upkeep is the only real cost, and it is measured in minutes rather than dollars once you own a razor.

After the first shave most men maintain at home every two to four days and come back to the shop every two to three weeks for a clean pass and a beard line. Our guide on how to shave your head at home covers the steps, and the head shave page covers what the shop version includes.

Razor bumps and scalp care after the shave

Coily hair can curl back into the skin as it regrows, and on the scalp that shows up as razor bumps at the back of the head and along the neckline. A clipper shave at a 0 avoids most of it because the hair is cut above the skin rather than below it. If you want the razor finish, shave with the grain, use a fresh blade, and moisturize after.

If bumps keep coming back, or you see dark raised spots that do not settle in a couple of weeks, that is a dermatologist question rather than a barber one. Persistent bumps on the back of the scalp can be a skin condition that needs treatment, not just a different razor. Everything a barber can do for you is on our services list; everything past that belongs to a doctor.

Questions readers ask

Should I buzz my head before shaving it?

Yes. A 0 guard buzz shows you your head shape and scalp with a sixteenth of an inch of hair still on, so you can decide with no risk.

Does shaving my head make hair grow back thicker?

No. Shaving cuts the hair above the skin and does not change the follicle. Regrowth feels coarser at first because the ends are blunt, not because there is more hair.

How often do I need to shave a bald head?

Every two to four days at home for a smooth finish, with a clean pass at the shop every two to three weeks if you want the edges and beard line done right.

Will a shaved head look good with my beard?

Usually better than with thin hair, because the beard carries the weight of the face. Keep the beard lined so the two read as one deliberate look.
