A burst fade curves around the ear in a half circle, leaving length on top and at the back while the hair behind the ear shortens fast. On curly and coily hair it is one of the sharpest ways to frame a full top, because the curl shows off the contrast.

The direct answer: for curly hair, ask for a burst fade with a guard 1 or 2 at the edge, the curl left at two to four inches on top and the back left longer. It suits coily and 4C hair, grows out cleanly and needs a refresh about every two to three weeks. Below are the main versions and how to choose.

Burst fade curly hair: the classic version

The burst fade starts above the ear and wraps around it in an arc. The sides fade tight, while the back and the top keep their length, so the haircut looks like a ring of short hair around the ear with curl rising above and behind it.

It works especially well on tight curls and coily hair, because the density of the top stands up against the clean skin of the fade. Many clients keep a short, twisted or sponged top and pair it with the burst. Our existing guide to the taper fade for curly hair compares curl patterns, and the burst is the choice when you want a bolder shape than a straight taper.

Mid fade curly hair

A mid fade starts the blend about halfway up the side of the head, around the temple. It shows more skin than a low fade and less than a high one, which makes it the everyday middle choice.

On curly hair it is easy to keep. The top stays full, the sides are clean and the curl shows. Ask for a guard 1 at the bottom, blending up to a guard 3 or 4 where it meets the top. Our post on the medium fade haircut goes deeper on it, and our mid taper fade for Black men shows how it grows out.

Drop fade curly hair

A drop fade curves downward behind the ear instead of running straight across, so the line follows the skull. It is dramatic on curly hair, because the curl at the crown flows into the curve.

It suits men with a rounder head and a full back, since the drop adds shape where the head is flat. If you like it low and subtle, read the low drop fade guide. Ask for the drop to start behind the ear and curve lower at the nape, and tell your barber how high you want it at the front.

What is a low burst fade?

A low burst fade starts the half circle close to the ear and keeps most of the side hair intact. Only a small arc behind and around the ear is faded down.

This is the safest version for first timers, and it is easy to grow out. It also suits men who work in an office or who want a cut that looks neat without too much skin. You get the burst shape with very little commitment. If you want a low look with a fringe on top, see the low taper fade with a textured fringe.

Taper burst fade

A taper burst fade uses a gradual taper around the arc, so the hair never goes fully to skin. It stays a soft gray rather than a bare edge.

This version works well for men who do not like a bald skin line, or whose scalp shows sharply against their hair color. It also grows out more gracefully, so it holds up a week longer. For another cut that mixes a taper with length at the back, our taper fade mullet post shows how the burst shape works in a longer style.

What does a burst fade look like?

Picture a horseshoe of short hair around the ear and the lower back of the head, with a full top. From the front, the sides look clean. From the side, the arc is visible. From behind, you see a clear line separating the long nape hair from the short edge.

Burst fade design and how to ask for it

Ask for a burst fade, say how high it starts, how short the edge goes and how much length you want left at the back. A photo helps more than any term.

Add a line up for $16 if you want the front and temples sharpened, and you can ask your barber about a hard part or other details that suit your hair. Our gallery shows work from the shop. Prices on our list are $30 for a fade, with the cost depending on what the cut involves, and you can read more about our fade cut before you come in.

Can you have a burst fade in the military?

Military grooming standards vary by branch and unit, and a burst fade with a long top usually will not meet them. Ask your command, or ask us for a military haircut such as a high and tight, induction or regulation cut for $25.

How do you style a burst fade?

Keep the top moisturized and defined. Curly hair on top of a fade looks best when it is shaped, not left frizzy.

For coils, use a curl cream and a wash and go, a soft brush or a sponge to define them. For twists, use a light gel and let them dry fully before you separate them. For a looser curl, a leave in conditioner and a pick lifts the top. Wrap your hair at night with a satin bonnet or durag to protect the shape.

Questions readers ask

Can you have a burst fade in the military?

Usually not with a long top, since standards are strict and differ by branch. Ask your command, or choose a high and tight, induction or regulation cut instead.

How to ask for a burst fade?

Say burst fade, then tell your barber how high it should start, how short the edge goes and how much length stays at the back. A photo makes it easier.

How long does a burst fade last?

About two to three weeks before the arc blurs. The top can wait longer than the edge.

Does a burst fade work on 4C hair?

Yes. The tight curl on top contrasts well with the clean arc, and the shape stays strong when the top is moisturized and defined.

Is a burst fade the same as a drop fade?

No. A burst fade makes a half circle around the ear, while a drop fade curves down behind the ear. They can be combined for a stronger shape.
